Jazz pianist, composer and arranger James Hayes has been teaching piano, drums and woodwinds for nearly 20 years. Classically taught, James has studied Jazz piano in Paris with American pianist and composer Jeff
Gardner, composition with Mark Bassey at the City Lit in London and attended the Jamey Aebersold summer school with pianist Phil de Greg and saxophone player Frank Griffith.In 2001, he decided to leave his City job and become a full-time musician.
Since James has been playing in most London venues with some of the
most talented Jazz musicians in the UK, sharing the stage with Tina May,
Steve Waterman, Nigel Hitchcock, Art Themen and many many more.
James has released two CDs of his own music (search YouTube for the
James Hayes Quintet or click here) as well as being a sideman for numerous London
based big bands before becoming the MD of the Thames TV Big Band.
James is also an active workshop leader within local schools. In recent
years, he has been running a Jazz workshop (the JazzCats), keyboard club
(the Orkeystra) and since 2012, the Richmond Music Academy, a holiday
music camp for young musicians.
